• AT&T, Verizon, TMobile, Sprint, Main carriers = Yes its Locked by brand as default.. Consumer Cellular ( 3rd party) after 6mths you can get it unlocked as per customer service support. Cant speak for any other carriers.

• For most carriers the phone must be completely paid off before it can be unlocked. We are on AT&T. We paid off our phones and unlocked them before traveling to Europe in 2017, so we could use Orange SIM cards. If you are purchasing the phone outright, I would buy it unlocked, so you don't have this problem. It is difficult to get a carrier to unlock a cell phone, but by law, after it is paid off, it's your phone and they have to.
