Hi Brian, You should be able to do that the way you want to. I have Verizon but when I got my phone they gave me a new SIM card and it allowed me to go to my store and activate it myself (or use my old SIM card since it fit). It may just be a store thing rather it may help if you preorder it or tell them you would rather take it to your phone company.
