Charge it until it says "100%" on the battery icon on the top right corner of your screen. You may have to change your settings for this (Settings> General > Usage > Battery Percentage > ON )
It usually will take 2-3 hours to go from about 5% to 100%.

Basically, plug it in at night, and let it go below 20% once a month and then let it fully charge before unplugging it.
