yes technically when you buy the new phone they scan it and activate the sim embedded in it from the factory. But you can call customer service and they will reassign you a new sim for the same number that you can get from an att store without even having to open the box. Gift it and the person then just swaps sims and boom done.

Only if you order it online and have it delivered to you. I bought online and did an in store pick up. It was a Christmas gift. The store said I had to activate it at the store.

You can activate at any time in any location. Just be mindful of specials AT&T may be having sometimes during the year they have activation fee waivers and discounts on monthly plans

No, phones MUST be activated in stores if you're upgrading through contracted carriers. You can defer the activations at a later day if the system allows you do. But you can never get it activated in a different city. It doesn't work like that.

With att you can buy the phone now and set the date you wish to have it activated in the future. For example if you are buying this as a gift, you can buy it a week early and have it activated on christmas day or on their birthday

Probably not. Ads I have seen state contract and activation required. That being said its easy to have your number changed or keep the old one for nostalgia
