The answer is no. You are not forced to sign up with total wireless when you buy this phone. You can activate the phone, set it up, connected to Wi-Fi, and then listen to your music, podcasts, and watch your streaming subscriptions all day. Keep in mind that if you do want to use it as a phone it is locked to total wireless and you will not be able to simply stick in a Sim card from your carrier of choice and start making calls and sending texts.
