You can transfer the information if on the icloud or on a email account . 
Yes you can keep you number if you stay with the carrier or transfer to another carrier before you cancel the service

no you can NOT KEEP your number but you can have them transfer contacts..I wanted to transfer my old AT & T number but they said I could not since it waS A designated # that I had transferred from AT&T to a new carrier & just wanted to transfer back

If you had a iPhone, just sign in with your icloud and everything should back up, it's another phone, there is a way, just have to get in contact with your carrier.
