I did not have to trade in my old phone to get my i8 at Best Buy continuing my service with Sprint. I owned my phone - it was not leased.

It depends on the plan you are right now with your current phone. Do you have a phone that is on a upgrade plan in that case yes you do need to turn in your old phone if you have just paid off for less than half of the phone cost. However if you have almost paid off the phone then you do not need to trade in your old phone. You could probably add a line to your account for the new Iphone or upgrade the phone with the previous plan.
