The iPhone 8 does appear externally very similar - if not identical to the iPhone 7 but the internal specs are different. A processor that is considerably faster and camera upgrades are the main talking points.

Apple did not change the form factor, but rather upgraded the internals and such. This is fairly standard for Apple.

The iPhone 8 is generally the same design as the iPhone 7 and was questionably named the "8" rather than the "7S". The 8's design was likely put on the backburner for the iPhone 10's design, so perhaps that may be a better choice if you are looking for a new design. If not, then the iPhone 7 is just about the same as the 8.
