It depends on how much you have left to pay but it can be traded in towards a new phone. My wife traded in her iPhone 8 and we both upgraded to iPhone XRs. The balance on the iPhone 8 was less than $300 and she had already paid enough months on it to be upgrade eligible. Consult your AT&T account or Best Buy online and you will be able to find out your eligibility.

I owed 125 on my son's phone but the trade in value was more than enough to cover the difference so we were able to trade in the phone and upgrade. Check with AT&T to see if you qualify for an upgrade if you've satisfied your contract enough to allow for the upgrade. Best Buy can help answer that question for you.
