“Does activation today literally mean same day or if giving as a gift on Christmas Eve to someone who has Verizon service and would activate it under that service, can it be activated a day or two later at same price when the gift is given?”

You can purchase the phone and activate it later. I didn’t activate the phone for a few days after receiving just because I was so busy with work!
