the iPhone is a phone. the iPod can make and take calls if it's connected to an iPhone and if it's connected to wi-fi. there is no monthly plan/bill to use an iPod unless you plan on using Apple Music (which is also available for the iPhone and not the same as iTunes) whereas you have a monthly bill with any phone. people mostly use this for things like music on the go.

We bought it for our youngest daughter and she thinks it's an iPhone, but there are stark differences starting with the weight and size. This thing is small! If the end user has large hands then there might be a cramp factor in play. And the internals- I'd liken this device to an mp3 player that has a decent screen and the app store, not an iPhone without the cellular radio. Like a mini iPad! All of this aside- it does exactly what we need it to, allows the youngest to have a "phone" too that she can watch YouTube kids on!
