Yes it’s a good idea to purchase another case for your iPad 
Especially if you’re not gonna use the keyboard every time you pick it up

I don’t think there’s a way to have both. The keyboard works by directly attaching the iPad. The magnet system is pretty strong. If you installed an additional case, you’d compromise your keyboard and I doubt it would it even work. I had the same concerns as you so I purchased a Logitech keys to go and a STM case. This set up worked for me.
