Yes. You can insert your DVDs in the drive and copy them to an external hard drive.

I did play an older DVD and it worked perfect.

You can do that with this drive. If you have movie DVD's that are not copyright protected, you can use handbrake to rip the information and store on a backup drive. If you have store bought, copyright protected DVD's, then you can rip them but it's illegal and I can't help with that.

This drive supports USB 3.0 and will read your older DVD's. If your Apple product supports USB 2.0/3.0 peripherals then it will work with your product.
