That's a function of the original source material, not the optical drive. DVD video is typically 720 pixels high, some video streams as high as 1080 pixels, but most streaming video is 720 pixels.

The super drive will pass data to the computer in whatever format is on the disc. In other words, if the disc you insert has a video file/movie at 720p resolution, that is what is seen on the computer unless you use software to upscale. I do not believe this drive will read blu-Ray discs.
