4K works on most hdmi cables. The step up is if you are trying to get the HDR picture if the tv is capable. Then yes you need a higher grade of hdmi and your tv may need you to plug the hdmi into a certain hdmi 2 or hdmi 3 slots. Sony.

For 4K bandwidth, the cable should be HDMI 2.0 compliant. However, many older cables will work fine. Before spending money on a new cable, try an existing cable.
