• I haven't noticed a loss in performance in changing the 8GB stick to a 16GB Crucial with similar specs

• It depends on what you are doing. For gaming, 8+8 is the fastest configuration for this machine. If you are running apps that need additional RAM headroom, then upgrade to more. If you aren't, keep it as-is.
