“I have an ASUS TUF gaming laptop that does not have a DisplayPort. I try to use an HDMI adapter but am still disconnected from the monitor. Is there any way to fix this or will i need to return it?”

If the monitor doesn't show up any video, please verify if the HDMI port is working properly, you are using known good video cable and the correct input source from monitor and output source from the laptop display properties was selected correctly. Check the AC adapter was properly connected from the unit to a working surge protector or AC outlet and the power button is being pressed all the way down to trigger a power on signal.
