Not sure this will help. I am running Monterey, not Big Sur. I put a 1994 movie dvd in..works fine. Same for 2022 movie DVD and also dvds that I store photos on. My computer does ask me if I want to allow access to this device and I agree and all is good. So maybe not too helpful for you. I followed the directions that came with it...but that was quite awhile ago so not much help there either. Sorry. I do think the door is a bit fragile and flat surface is definitely useful when inserting the DVDs.
