“I can enter the # into the directory, but when it asks me to spell the name from this phone, it doesn't spell correctly. For example JANE - the N and E are not the top letter of the number, so it spells it incorrectly. No info about this in the manual.”

You have to hit the respective number key with the letter that you want for the same amount of times as the letter is placed on that key. For instance, if the letter is a B, you have to hit the number 2 two times. If the letter is an E, you have to hit the number 3 two times If the letter is an F, you have to hit the number 3 three times, and so on.
