“Why are these so expensive? I've read they are made with cheap components and then metal is added to give them weight and feel higher quality. Is this true?”

Construction is very poor over 3 weeks and they seem like if they are about to break retuning them to the store keeping my Bose® - QuietComfort® 35 wireless headphones II with Google Assistant.

Beats have always been expensive but no more than any other brand of nice headphones. They are stylish and very popular but truly, they offer a good sound. Hope this makes you feel better!
