I haven't tested an AirTag's range, but I have read that about 30 feet is common in real-world situations with walls and other obstacles, but greater than 100 feet outdoors with no obstacles. But, if you lose one, for example, if it falls out of your pocket, your iPhone will alert you to that as soon as you change your location and it will tell you where it was last detected. In addition, Apple says that you will get a reading of the location of a lost or stolen AirTag if it is within that distance of anyone who is carrying an iPhone.
