I battled with this for a while. I was debating whether to use my wife's "old" 6th gen iPadPro 12.9 or keep using my 5th gen Air. When connecting to an external monitor, "extending" only works for units that us the Apple M series chips. Extending is not supported on the Intel chipsets for some reason.
