We have been using it this way for over a month now and have not had any problems. We have not had any flare ups and whatever grease hits them must immediately burn off because they look clean now and the crumb tray cleans up very easily. Of course we have only cooked stuff in it out of the freezer case (french fries, onion rings, breaded shrimp, etc.), it isn't like we cook bacon in it :-)
