• YES, without tray hot air does not circulate around basket bottom . Ninja users say USE crisping tray for everything. Ninja says no -- makes buyers buy separately. Ninja is cheap to not include crisper tray and liars to say tray not needed. Lucky to read answers to questions before I wasted money to purchase.

• It works better with the tray. The air fryer works by moving hot air around the items. If food is contacting the bottom, there is less air flow and then the bottom of the food won't be as crispy.

• No not really. You can buy liners for it and cook without it, but most things you are better off using it, because of the air flow to cook it evenly. I use the silicone liners with it, to protect the basket, but I have also cooked without them.
