The food tastes about the same as food cooked on a George Foreman grill but it doesn't have the same flavor as being cooked over flames or charcoal.

Not really though it achieves a pretty decent char. I’m going to see if adding liquid smoke in some way will change or at least fake it a bit.

You don't get an actual 'charcoal smoke' flavor, but more of a hearty meat flavor is what you taste. But the difference is minimal and this unit is way easier to operate and clean up then an outside charcoal/gas grill. The warm up time is just a couple of minutes and you are grilling.
