I have an old bose 3 ring cable with volume and mic and they work just fine, even with the headphones "off" (i.e. the Bluetooth and noise canceling switched off). But be warned, they don't connect to Windows OS (can't use the Bluetooth with a laptop or tablet running windows).

The audio cable is for, well, audio should you need to directly connect. The built-in mic covers calls, etc.
