There are 5 different levels of noise canceling available that can be changed.

If you download the Bose app to your phone the app walks you through everything the earbuds can do.  Very easy to use app as well!

Yes, it gives you the options of awareness or noise canceling after you put your earbuds in both ears. Just tap the right earbud to select.
