Yes. You can use the Bose QuietComfort Headphones purely for active noise cancellation (ANC) without listening to music and without connecting to any device. Bose specifically supports a "noise cancellation only" mode. Here's how: Disconnect your mobile device.Turn the Bluetooth feature off on your mobile device. Press the Action button change the mode. NOTE: To reconnect your mobile device, select the headphones from the Bluetooth list on your device.

The only issue is it might cycle through with an announcement saying it’s looking to connect or something similar periodically. Best scenario is to connect it to a device and let it announce “connected to (device name)” and then use them without any audio through the device.
