Sounds very good without purchasing a subwoofer, but your decision.

If you prefer a much stronger sub-bass thump, but the bass is good enough for me (it's a subjective judgement) with just the soundbar at its default setting. With the Bose Music app you also have the option to adjust the bass level upwards if you prefer, so I don't think one "needs" the sub — but it's an option
