“I have an older IPod, circa 2009/2010. Not even sure what version it is (rectangular not square). Will it work with this particular docking station? If not, what adjustments would make it work?”

While the dock on this speaker is not compatible with older iPods, you could connect it to the auxiliary jack on the back of the speaker with a standard male to male 3.5mm audio cable.
