Yes, with a caveat. The right earbud will work without the left, the left will not (as far as I know) work without the right. My understanding is that the right is the primary earbud and initiates the Bluetooth connection, the left earbud has a reserved Bluetooth connection to the right, and connects thru the right earbud. This being necessary for the synced sound. That being said there might be some workaround to use the left by itself, but as I have never just wanted the left earbud I have not looked for one. I have, on occasion, used just the right.

Hello, there. Thank you for your question. You can use the right earbud of the SoundSport Free for music and phone calls while the left bud is charging in the case. The right earbud is required for use of the headset, as the right earbud works as the "master", receiving a signal from your device and sharing it to the left bud. We hope this helps! Yes you can use one at a time but you need the left one to pair. Once done you can use either. If you want to use for calls you need to use the right one.
