Yes you can use either ear piece and have a conversation but the right ear piece controls the voice command and phone calls so you will ultimately need to use that one to start/end the call. Also if you are using the left ear piece to talk you cannot place the right one into the charger during the conversation As that will disconnect the headphones (since it is the main one). You can however have the left headphone in the charger while still using the right ear piece.
