Yes, you can use just the right earbud if you want to. There is an Android app that will show the battery level.

Great question! The right ear bud can be used separately, while the left charges in the charging case. The Bose Connect App can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store (Android devices) and the Apple App Store (iOS devices).
