“Can this speaker be installed in existing drywall without the backing box?”

• The backbox is integral to the design and the speaker cannot be installed without it. Depending on your wall surfaces (painted drywall versus Venetian plaster) it may be relatively inexpensive to zip out a section of drywall to install the backbox.
