Yes, there is a view finder. The battery is the standard Canon battery and does not use AA. To save "juice" while taking photos, turn off the preview mode after every shot and only use the back screen when necessary. If you fully charge the battery before you use it though, you should be able to make it all day without issue (but always pack a spare for that last awesome shot just in case.)
