“Bought this projector, default brightness is too dim. Settings menu has a field to change brightness, set at default of 50, but function is greyed out. How to select this function? if i can't increase brightness to 100% i will have to return it.”

This projector, or any in this price range, are not designed for well lit rooms. The image will be washed out. You will need to get a much brighter projector for a well lit room.
