Yes, that's how i'm using it on the system right now. I got one for my system to replace the physically larger hard drive with. This helped to increase air flow in the system and reduced the power draw. It also runs cooler than my old drive.

No, this tray fits Laptop sized hard drives. It would not fit the 3.5 inch hard drives.

Don't understand why people are giving you flack over this, but a 2.5" is a regular hdd and you're obviously asking if this can be used to mount a 2.5", which it can be used for. SSDs are based off the 2.5" standard which was here first, of course a bracket will mount anything that is 2.5" standard compliant.

No only 2.5 inch drives fit in it.
