I did the same for 24gb on a similar asus laptop
It will still run dual channel. At the speed of the slower onboard ram.

You'd have to confirm within your manual if adding a 16gb module would be both: compatible/impactful, please refer to your system's QVL for a list of modules tested to be compatible with your system.
