There are standards which determine quite a bit about the memory - for instance, laptops tend to use SO-DIMMS which are much smaller (about half the width.) DDR 3 (the standard before this) won't fit in a DDR 4 slot, and DDR 4 won't fit in a DDR5 (the newest, barely-out) slot - there was some talk of it, but apparently that was (wisely) decided against. You'll also want to know about speed, but typically you need to go into your Bios to enable an XMP profile to get more than the base speed out of it. In short - while you should check your system's manufacturer website for specifics, if it takes DDR4, this should work.
