You can buy 2 and have 32 IF your device has 2 slots which most do but there are some that only have 1 slot.

Either one is fine. You can either get a two pack of 16 or a 32 GB RAM stick but 32 is the maximum it can hold depending on your device. I hear some can go up to 64.

You may need to check with your laptop customer service only some laptop officially do not support but it does work as you expect,
