You can control it both ways! When you are at home you just walk up and push the controls directly on the pot. When you are away to change the controls the pot needs to be hooked up to wifi to change the settings through the app wemo.

You Can Control it from anywhere there is a connection, It uses the WeMo App, the controls are limited to Warm, Low and Hot; plus the cooking time. They also have updated the Application and the Software via OTA Update to allow it to connect via IFTTT for more automation, like control via Amazon Echo or Geo-location to start warming up the food when you are on your way home
