You can make odd number cups of coffee just add for example five cups and select the four option on the coffee maker it will still spit out five cups. Make sure you have the strength setting adjusted in order to reach the strength that you desire because you will have one extra cup of coffee for the four ground. So we put it on strength too and it's perfect for us.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I figured out within 10 minutes that there is no volume control per se. The amount of coffee brewed is the amount of water you add to the tank. Also coffee strenghth is VERY personal/ individual. After three trials and errors I found a grind setting of 4 and water amount of 8 with my particular coffee (Trader Joe's med. Joe) is perfect. Your adjustment is the amount of water. Period.

In effect, you have to jury rig the system to make and odd number of cups of coffee and "guess" on the strength when you do so.
