• All of the Back-up UPS I use have always placed in the upright position. There are foot-pads on the bottom and air vents on the side panels. I don't recommend laying the unit on its side due to restricting airflow. Also, I don't know what effect that would have on the battery.

• It has air vents on the side I do not know if that would be advisable.
