“It comes with 8gb but that's a bit teeny. To upgrade this particular model to 16 is it just buy another chip or is this like 4, 2gb chips I have to throw away? Is there a free slot I guess is my question.”

It comes with one 8gb chip. There are a total of 4 slots. I just bought another 8gb chip and upgraded to 16gb. I still have 2 free slots.

If you do plan to upgrade RAM, you should use the same brand and manufacturer.
