In my opinion, YES. The bases provide a secure anchor. Without them, I would be worried about them tipping over when touched by a child or pet. My listening area is carpeted, and I also use the 'spiked' feet on the silver bases. They give me extra confidence against tipping.

i wouldn't use them without the bases. they are very tall, and although they are bottom heavy, i believe they would tip over pretty easy.

No, the silver stand is not required. they simply screw in. They wouldn't be as stable without them though as the speakers themselves are somewhat narrow.

I would say the base is not "required" but I would be careful about not using it if you have small children or pets. I think the speaker is much easier to topple over with out the base. The speakers sound great!
