I connected it in-line with my apple TV 4k and have CEC on for the TV. My TV is an older VIZIO 3D Smart TV it gets the volume from the TV just fine. My tv says Audio system Volume and I did not have to change anything. as long as the TV supports ARC (Audio Return Control) then you are fine.
