5 channel audio requires the source to generate each of the 5, If your source is stereo (2 channels) your input in Pure mode will see only 2 channels. Blueray players for example, will source the video and 5 channel audio via the HDMI connector.

If the source does not have surround sound data then there will not be any information sent to the center channel and surround speakers. The Pure, and Pure Direct modes will only output whatever the source is encoded with, where as Stereo only does Front Left and Front Right speakers. Multi-Channel stereo will split a stereo signal across all your speakers, while this provides sound coming from all of your speakers, this is not true mixed surround sound as you would find at a movie theater. You should be able to hear surround sound working with a streaming source that is capable of Dolby Surround or Atmos, as well as a Blu-Ray movie that supports those formats. We would also recommend that you use the surround sound modes to achieve this effect.
