Hello Don. If you have no more than 7 speakers (not including the subwoofer/s) in the family room, you will not require an external amplifier to power a pair of speakers in another room/zone. You can assign the 'Height 1' speakers to Zone 2 duties. Here is a link to the details: https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX3800H/NA/EN/DRDZSYckfdjdpu.php If you already have nine speakers connected, you can use an external amplifier to connect your Zone 2 speakers using the Zone 2 pre-outs of the AVR-X3800H.
