This cable is a standard VGA cable, so it should be suitable for connecting devices with VGA ports. For reference, VGA output and input ports have 15 tiny holes arranged in three rows of five with the center row shifted sideways by half a hole. These holes line up with tiny pins on VGA cables. For pictures of ports and cables, search VGA in google images.

Once the cord is in place you should get an image on your monitor. If you don't, check your connections, make sure your monitor is turned on. You may have to restart your laptop for the computer to recognize the new connection. This is plug and play for you, so if it doesn't work at all, you may have something else to deal with.

If it is an older or less expensive model it will most likely use this connector. Newer higher end laptops use hdmi connections. You will also need to check what connections your monitor has as well.
