The contents of an alkaline battery don't pose any problems for landfills. Where the concern is, however, is in the processing facilities. There, workers are exposed to leaking batteries and potential injury such as being burned.

it is always best to recycle any type of batteries no matter the type they are. all the chemicals inside the batteries can either be reused, revitalized, or neutralize to make it safe to dispose of.

All alkaline batteries are suppose to be dropped off at battery centers to be recycled or disposed of properly and not just tossed in the trash like the majority of people do to save time and hassle of doing it the way it should be done. I have tossed batteries in the trash myself too.
